NewsRob 2.8

- Autoskip empty dashboard

- Titles can have varying lengths

- Bug fixes (e.g. embedded URLs ending in a dot)

- Small improvements (e.g. extra padding at the bottom of articles in feed view, so that the zoom controls don't overlay the bottom of an article)

- Small cosmetic changes (e.g. read indicator)

- and more small stuff

  1. here is one for 2.9 (or 2.8.x):
    startup label :D

  2. even better: choose what labels to sync, not just feeds.

i have many many labels, and over 400 feeds.
i only need like 4 labels to be pulled on my android :)

  4. Hi Mariano.

Thanks for the notification sound option.
I can't wait until the next new article pop's up ;)

  5. Hi Mariano,

Your app is really great, easily the best one on the market.

I know its not new but i love the option to download mobile or webpages with the feeds too. This helps a lot if you have only teaser rss feeds like the heise ones.

as i already wrote, you definetly help google reader getting more users just in order to use NewsRob ;)

i'm just downloading the update to see how the changes fare.

  6. Again. nice update.

Dude, make it a paid app!

  7. Thanks for the great app! This is my favorite.

The new update brings more items into a screen by using narrower rows in title list, but it also makes it harder to click. And the dynamically changing height according to title length makes the title list an uneven feel. Personally I prefer the previous version (with larger and equal heights), :-) Just my two cents!

Again, nice work and keep it going!

  8. Nice App!!!

    Can i add some sugestions??

-Ability to sort from older or newer
-I like the previous feed list, with the same height.
-Also it should include the date of the feed (the feed list)
-Ability to hide the feed title when reading the feed (not to fix it at the top of the screen)
-and put the arrows (next/prev feed) in a bottom/top bar.

but, hey! these ara only suggestions. I like this awesome app! thanks!

  9. Bugabundo,

you can set for those feeds you are not interested in that only the headers should be loaded and not the content.

To ignore those feeds altogether is not possible in an efficient matter. Sorry.

    Cheers,
    Mariano

  10. Thanks Kevin,

it's really great to just get feedback that something is great - without a "but" ;-) I think since the inception of NewsRob I got less than 10 of those ;-)

    Cheers,
    Mariano

  11. Thanks Shapur,

sounds great. Heise and SPON are both sites I have in mind when I think about how to best deal with partial-feeds ;-)

    Cheers,
    Mariano

  12. Liuyiyi,

I see what you say, but I don't think the lines are too small to touch them and the uneven feel is not all that bad.

I could (a) make the rows comply to a minimum height, but that would mean, like before, that some spaced will be unused.
I could (b) make the rows not grow more than to, say, 5 lines, but this would mean that some articles are not readable.

Or I could use an option to toggle the old behaviour. But I would really love to not do any of those. Simpler is better and each switch/toggle/preference I introduce makes NewsRob more complex. And believe me, there are users complaining about its complexity.

Do me a favor. Try it out like it is today for two weeks and then re-consider your point of view.

If you still feel it should be different, please add to this discussion: http://groups.google.com/group/newsrob/browse_frm/thread/35d56f93bf185591

    Cheers,
    Mariano

  13. JailDesigner,

-Ability to sort from older or newer
    -> On my TODO list

-I like the previous feed list, with the same height.
-> Please see my previous comment to liuyiyi.

-Also it should include the date of the feed (the feed list)
-> I don't see why this is necessary. You can see the date when you open the item. I would like to keep NewsRob simple.

-Ability to hide the feed title when reading the feed (not to fix it at the top of the screen)
-> I'll keep that in mind.

-and put the arrows (next/prev feed) in a bottom/top bar.
-> There will be, at some point in time, a re-design, where I want to add a nav bar to the top. The arrows should go there too.

    Cheers,
    Mariano

  14. Mariano can i do that on the label?
doing it per feed is too much work :)

    enjoy the holidays

  15. Mariano,

NewsRob is an awesome application. Not only did it do everything I wanted including offline reading, but also some things I didn't know I wanted like partial-feed reading. It has exceeded all my expectations.

    Thank you so much!

  16. BUGabundo,

that wouldn't make all that much sense, as labels are usually organized by topic (sports, tech, daily, android) and the download-type is by webpage-delivery-type (full feed, partial feed, mobile web page, etc.).

Also inheriting settings (labels -> feeds) is a concept well known to developers, but hard to grasp for everybody else. And simplicity is king when compared to saving a few clicks.

    Cheers,
    Mariano

  18. Hi Mariano,

I've been using NewsRob for some time, and I'm totally loving using it. The recent addition of friends' shared items is really nice.

The three remaining things I'd love to see:

    - the ability to Share an item out of the browser, into some sort of dialog where I can decide whether to star an item, share it, or share it with a note. This would mean I could make a note of a page while browsing and follow it up from the desktop. Being able to choose a default label for these would be great ("From phone" for example).

    - the ability to turn off the big next/previous arrows when browsing a page linked off a feed item.

    - a paid or donate version so I can give you some money. Feel free to implement this one first, for goodness' sake!

  19. Hey Michael,

thanks for your feedback and the proposed prioritization ;-).

Regarding the last issue I would like to direct you to this post: http://groups.google.com/group/newsrob/browse_frm/thread/4a9cbaae90048309

The navigation is a hairy topic. Some people love it, some people hate it. It's really hard to get it right. We are not at the end here, but there are no tiny increments to a good solution in sight, at least none that wouldn't waste screen real estate.

You can already star and share an article from within the app, e.g. using the context menu of an article. Sharing with note was something that I would like to add, but just today I did some research and it doesn't look good.
If you want to have a more detailed account, could you please ask this question on the mailing list?

    Cheers,
    Mariano
